I read on AMD's website that the Athlon XP 1700+ and 1800+ come in two flavors: model 6 and model 8. What are the differences between models 6 and 8? According to the website's list of recommended mobos for Athlon XP, some Socket A boards can't handle the model 8 Athlon XP processors. Why is this? I'm researching Athlon XP and socket A boards with a view to upgrading to both and I don't want to screw up by purchasing incompatible hardware.

Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to the forums! :)

I've never heard of them reffered to as Model 6 and Model 8.

BUT, I am assuming that refers to the diff b/t a Palomino and a Thoroughbred.

Differences:

XP1700 Palomino = .18u die process, runs on 1.750 volts, default. Multiplier is LOCKED (you must do the fill in the gaps/connect bridges at L1 to access multi change
XP1700 thru XP2400 Thoroughbred = .13u die process, runs on either 1.600 or 1.650 volts, default. Multiplier is UNLOCKED on NForce2 motherboards...you can change it freely in the bios.

To my knowledge, the TBreds are only unlocked on NForce2 motherboards, which would explain why the Asus and Epox NForce boards are hotter than a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue right now.

Hope this helps.

ps
You want a TBred chip...preferably the XP2100 "AIUHB-stepping."
