Difference between ATA100 and ATA66 HDD?

Hi,
I'm looking at buying a new hdd and I'm considering this Maxtor

I'm also looking at the IBM Deskstar 60GXP at Newegg.

I noticed that the IBM is a ATA100 drive and the Maxtor is a ATA66 drive (both are 7200 rpm). What's the difference? Can you use an ATA100 drive on an older system? I'm asking because I plan to put this in a Celeron 366 for about 6 months before I build another computer.

Is a ATA66 drive upgradeable to ATA100?

I just don't know what the difference is exactly. I don't know what makes a drive a ATA100 over a ATA66.

Can anyone shed some light?

TIA,

Sal

You should be okay in purchasing either ATA66 or ATA100. In a nuttshell, ATAT66 and ATA100 is the "maximum achievable burst transfer rate" for the hard drive.

Actually, the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus60 HD family are the ones to consider if you're thinking Maxtor--ATA100, 7200RPM. These are slightly below that of the 60GXPs.

So.. There's a big difference between the Maxtor Plus60 series and the one that I have linked?

Also.. This is a Retail box that I'm looking at and the Newegg is an drive only (not sure if it's OEM). Does it not come with the software, cables, etc..? What would I need to buy if I bought the drive only? Just cables and screws if I don't have them?

Thanks again,

Sal

I don't see the Maxtor model #STO154000U listed on Maxtor's site. Does anyone have any info on this drive or a link for it?

Never mind. I just found out that the part number that I gave was for a drive kit and not the actual drive. Check out the deals forum if you are in need of a Maxtor 60 series 40 gb hdd. With price matching BB with Staples, you can get them for just under $100.

Sorry.. I didn't know if I was supposed to mention any deals here, that's why I hesitated earlier.
