Difference between amounts of memory modules

Is there any real difference performance-wise if you have, lets say, one 512MB stick or two 256MB sticks? I'm interested particularly in DDR-type memory.

essentially no.
the only time you will notice a difference is if you use 2 sticks of DDR in dual channel mode, as opposed to 1 stick.

but generally it's always been nicer to just have 1 big high density stick in the past, for less chance of memory conflict.

but lately, 2 sticks for dual channel is probably best (make sure they are the exact same stick/brand)

If it's an AMD system, then 1 512 is probably better so that you can add more later.

If it's an Intel system, then 2x256 in dual channel IS better.
