Difference between a turbo and supercharger?

If I was told correctly, a supercharger heats the air coming in so it can ignite the gas faster. What about the turbo? Does it just pump the gas faster? I wasn't ever really told how those work.

You were told wrong.

Both are devices to force air into an engine, so more fuel can be added and result in more power.

A supercharger is belt driven.

A turbo is driven by the exhaust gasses.

The air mixes with the gas, and a spark ignites it, causing an explosion.

Or read this.

Learn how the internal combustion engine works, and you'll understand. Normally, a carburetor or the air intake sucks air in.....forced induction literally blows more air in than the engine could pull in on its own.....therefore you can add more gas, get a bigger explosion, and more power.

ROFL

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't get it.......
I'm with you...

I got that, but it isnt accurate, or funny.

Generally, supercharger >> turbocharger.

Therefore, more power = faster speed = more damage done on impact.

So while a turbocharger = massive injuries, a supercharger = death.

BTW, I don't find it funny in the slightest either - just trying to shed some light on the earlier commentary.

Eh, it the physics get way too complicated. Simply:

ricers + turbo ~ ricers + super = smashed cars :)

(you hear luvly got banned? i still don't know why though)

Hm, never knew that superchargers were regarded as better. Oh well, no sense spending too much time contemplating a stupid post;)

also, the superchargers tend to be heavier, where as turbos are lighter.

but there is the issue w/ turbo lag, since it has to wait for enough exhaust before spooling up the power, but once the turbo hits, it's pretty cool, with the high pitch whine of turbo and all. in more expensive set ups, they use 2 smaller turbos, ie twin turbo, which spool up faster and reduce the turbo lag somewhat.

Myself, i rather get turbo because I dont like the idea of the supercharger running off the belt...

it all depends on the application, i mean to know which is better...supercharger or turbo.

For gasoline trucks, you'd want a supercharger since there's no lag and tons of torque. For a diesel truck, you'd want a turbo..since the diesel creates so much torque at low rpms, it wouldn't make a difference.

For indivudal cars, well it depends on the motor. For example, on a 3L VQ, turbo seems be a whole lot better than a S/C. Makes more power at same psi and the engine just loves it. So far the record is 450fwhp on stock internals.

Other than that, its personal preference.

Btw Ankit, read those links I posted in the previous thread you started about cars. It will explain in details with nice pictures and animations.
