difference between a roadster and a convertible

hello,

are all roadsters convertibles but all convertibles are not roadsters.or are they synonymous?

i as looking at their wiki entries, and the wiki entry for the roadster reads "the word is often used to describe a two-seat convertible without fixed window frames, especially a light-weight sports car. ",
does this mean that if there are fixed window frames then it is a convertible

Roadsters are two seats, verts are 4. Roadsters also usually have a removable hardtop instead of a fold down (usually called a vert, like the vette convertible is not a roadster even though it has two seats).

Actually these days it is whatever the manufacturer decides to call it.

Roadster is a sub-classification of convertible

That is, all roadsters are convertibles while not all convertibles are roadsters

Main Entry: 1 con·vert·ible
Pronunciation: \k?n-'v?r-t?-b?l\
Function: adjective
Date: 14th century
1 : capable of being converted <a bond convertible to 12 shares of common stock>
2 : having a top that may be lowered or removed <convertible coupe>

thanks for the replies,

maybe a car with 2 seats and a removable hard top roof is a roadster.

and a convertible converts between a roadster and a coupe.
hence it will have a foldable roof.

is the boxster a roadstep or a convertible?

Err...no on both counts 🙁

The Boxster is a roadster in the narrowest classification and a convertible in a more general classification.

i am bit confused,
why is this not correct? "maybe a car with 2 seats and a removable hard top roof is a roadster. "

"hard-top" doesn't have to be in there...

A roadster has no top unless its a removable hardtop. The first dodge vipers were roadsters. They didn't even have real side windows.

From Wikipedia 😉:

"Roadster is the North American term (spyder in England and a barchetta in Italy) for a 2-seater without a permanent top and without rollup windows (if it has rollup windows it is a cabriolet, not a roadster), and the windshield is bolt on rather than integrated as in modern cars."

"A convertible (sometimes called cabriolet in British English) is a car body style with a folding or retracting roof (aka 'soft top' or 'top' in USA, 'hood' in UK). The collapsible roof section is typically made from flexible canvas or vinyl, although plastic, aluminium, and steel have occasionally been used in elaborate folding designs. Most modern vehicles have an electrical retraction mechanism."

i am confused by the boxster being a roadster,

does not have a retractable roof top, and also rollup windows

what are rollup windows, are they the windows which go up and down?

are all roadsters convertibles and all convertibles are not roadsters?

It is whatever the manufacturer decides to call it. Same with SUV's and sport utes and crossovers etc etc
