Difference between a Dell 8 cell and 12 cell battery

I know, I know...4 cells....But can anyone explain the amount of hours in difference between these batteries?

Thanks!

Current Lithium Ion batteries are roughly 8 Watt/hours per cell. For example, the 6-cell battery used in a Dell Latitude D600 has a total of 48 Watt/hours of capacity.

The 8 Cell would thus have 64 Watt/hours of capacity and the 12 Cell 96 Watt/hours.

How long your computer will run depends on the average number of Watts it uses. A Dell D600 probably runs between 12 and 15 Watts depending on screen brightness and WiFi usage. Thus the 6-Cell battery would last between 3-4 hours, 4+ hours with all nonessentials turned off.

12-cell batteries generally power bigger notebooks with desktop parts.

thanks a lot for that info! i was just searching google in the meantime and found your explanation better than any others out there!

so the more cells the better, am I right to asume that more cells means biger battery and what would be the biggest cell you could use say for in a dell d600. Would a 12 cell fit?

I believe they are only selling 8 cells with the D600 and 600M due to weight and cost. You can get a modular battery (also 8 cells) if you are willing to swap out the optical drive during use, this will bring your useage time up around 7 hours. The 600m is pretty nice in the fact that it drains the modular battery first, so when you have 50% power, you can take it out (hotswappable) and have 100% on your primary battery, and slide the optical drive back in.

I believe that's wrong. D600 and 600m ship with 6-cells. They last about 3-4 hours depending on your hardware config and use. Dell gives you an option to buy weight-saver batteries, these are 3 or 4 cells (forgot which). You can also get a modular battery which is also 6-cells.
