I am thinking of getting an amd processor but i am not sure between 2500+ Barton and 2600+. Does the 2500+ Barton outperform the 2600+ since the other one is a barton?

A higher clocked Tbred-B will generally outperform a lower clocked barton even if the barton has a higher PR rating in the majority of tests. Go with the Tbred-B (2600+)

Yup, the T-Bred 2600+ (STEPPING 1, WITH 333Mhz FSB!!!) is as fast as 2700+ (consider when you look at TomsHardware benchmarks. Look at 2700+, not at 2600+, his 2600 is old one with 266FSB) yet costs 40 bux less. Its faster than Barton 2500+ in all apects. Go with 2600+, cuz in todays market, 2600+ is THE best combo of speed vs. price (remember july 2000 when PIII 667EB was the best combo)

that's true but the barton 2500+ costs much less than the xp2600+
from newegg,

for oem
AMD ATHLON XP 2500 "Barton" 333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- OEM $127
AMD ATHLON XP 2600 /333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- OEM $146

for retail
AMD ATHLON XP 2600 /333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- Retail $155
AMD ATHLON XP 2500 "Barton" 333 FSB PROCESSOR CPU- RETAIL $128

the 21% increase in price (retail) is not matched by the performance increase? this makes the barton 2500+ a much better deal if it is fast enough for the applications needed.
just my 0.02
