I see both of them connected ... one at 100 mbps and the other at 400.]

What's the difference between 1394 connection and my ethernet adapter?

1394: created by Apple in 1995. Also known as "FireWire." Used mainly for digital cameras, externel data storage devices, etc. Max cable length: 4.5 meters.

Ethernet: created by Xerox sometime in the 1970s. Some ethernet cables can have lengths of up to 500 meters.

100 Meters for UTP.

Thick ethernet cable (looks like yellow garden hose) can go ~500 meters (it's coax)

FWIW
