The original IntelliMouse in NOT optical, whereas the IntelliMouse Explorer is. If you are talking about the IntelliMouse Optical, there are still some sutble differences.

IO is a bit smaller and is symmetric for right- or left-handed use and only comes in eggshell. IE is clearly a large grey beast meant for right-handed action only.

I don't own either. I do, however, plan to buy the Intellimouse Optical and not the Explorer.

I have an Intellimouse Optical and my roommate has the Explorer. I like the Optical better cause it fits in my hand better. Plus, the way the Explorer is made, your hand is a little slanted, which I didn't like. What I would suggest is going to a store and see if they have them on display and try them out for yourself. I know CompUSA displays the mice, so you might try there if there is one near you.

From what I can tell from using both of them.....yes. Although, if you're a lefty, you're kind of SOL with the Explorer because I've never heard of a lefty version of it.

I have the Explorer, and i love it. Espcially the 2 configurable side buttons. I dont like the IO, as it is too small for my hands, and the placement of the sidebuttons is so that i can never use the outside side button, whereas i can use both sidebuttons simply with my thumb on the Explorer.
But in the end its just personal thing, depending on how big or small your hands are and how it 'feels' in your hand. Like said above, go try em out at a store.
