always wondered this.........i dont know that much about the older stuff, i know bx is hailed as the greatest chipset ever by many, i basically know about the bx, and 815, and 845, but other stuff leaves me amiss....the older sockets/slots are beyond me also.

any site with something like a timeline of sockets/slots/chipsets?? that would be cool

The 440LX chipset was the chipset in general use before the 440BX. It was the first chipset to implement AGP, at AGP1x and AGP2x. It also introduced SDRAM to the P6 platform. Only 1 official FSB was supported: 66MHz. It also updated the South Bridge from the PIIX3 used on the 440FX to the newer PIIX4 supporting ATA33.

The 440ZX chipset is a stripped down version of the 440BX chipset, released to save costs. It is the same as the 440BX in every way, except for the following differences: the 440ZX had no SMP support, maximum of 256MB of RAM, a maximum of 4 PCI slots. Note that there are 2 versions of the 440ZX chipset. The original 440ZX-66 chipset was limited to 66MHz FSB only. THis was later replaced by the full fludged 440ZX which supported both 66MHz and 100MHz FSB.

Let me know if you want to know about the other chipsets such as the 440FX, 440KX/GX, 450KX/GX, 450NX, 430 series....

that was exactly what i was looking for andyhui, thanks :)

feel free to delve into the other chipsets, like i said, i dont know much about that stuff...also sockets and slots...man before slot A, socket A, socket 423 and socket 478...well and socket 370....before those, i have no idea what the order was. i have a p233 in a socket 7, and i think pentium II's went in slot 1's.....so did slot p3's....ok that is all i know

feel free to explain :) thanks

I had a motherboard that used the "Elite BX" chipset once. What is that? It supported PPGA and Slot1.
