Dieting, losing weight and the obese

It's amazing how many diet plans exist. Americans spend $40 billion annually on dieting and diet-related products, over $100 for every man, woman and child. Insane.

Losing weight is technically simple because it only takes ONE thing: Will. Not low-carb diets. Not high-protein diets. Not grapefruit, energy shake, celery diets, etc. Just will.

Stop shovelling food in your mouth and you will lose weight.

Unless you are being force fed, YOU are responsible for your weight. You are the one feeding yourself. If you can't lose weight, it's because you can't control yourself or simply find the satiation of hunger more important than weight loss. Perhaps some people have abnormally low metabolic rates but the most part, everybody can physically control their weight to a reasonable range if they have the will to do so.

Because willpower is the key to weight control, I don't feel that obese people deserve anti-discriminatory protections by the government. I think it is unreasonable to force industry (like airlines) to make special accommodations for excessively overweight people. If being overweight is inconvenient, isn't that a good motivator itself to lose the pounds?

In some cases (as with genetic diabetes or cardio vascular problems) a diet can be neccesary, however I agree with you that will is the key in this matter. If you don't have to work like Hell for it, you're still going to end up a fatty.

i have gotten into many heated debates taking your point of view. if one eats 5000 calories a day and isn't a currently training navy seal, they will gain a lot of weight and it will be entirely their fault. i cannot agree with you more.
