Yes, they did recently change the formula:

From Wikipedia : Mountain Dew
In 2006, Diet Mountain Dew was reformulated - it is now sweetened with a blend of sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium. The previous formulation only used aspartame. The new "Tuned Up Taste" has prompted a petition for long-time Diet Mountain Dew drinkers unhappy with the change. Another site, NewDietDewIsYucky.com, features an action list and critical commentary on the new formula. This effort's goal is restoration of the original formula, either under the original label or under a new "Diet Mountain Dew Classic" (or similar) label.

Why not just use Stevia (Wikipedia)? It's naturally occuring and requires less to achieve the same level of sweetness. This sweetener is actually used in coke products in Japan at the moment, because Japan has stricter controls on additives. Stevia also has health benefits 😛.

Any proof that Stevia is used in Japan because of regulation? Because neither Aspartame nor Spenda is banned in Japan.

I switched to diet soda / water a while back.
I accidently ordered a coke a couple days ago instead of a diet coke in a restaurant for lunch. I couldn't believe how much I didnt' like it.
My point is, you get used to the less sweet taste eventually.

I didn't realize that they had changed the formula. I might give it a try now. I couldn't stand the after-taste of it. Diet Coke is the worst.

Yea I switched from reg soda to Diet (Coke, DrPepper) and I can;t stand regular coke. Taste too sweet and kinda nasty now. But Diet Coke ROCKS!!!

You're also wrong. Coke standardized it's sweeteners world wide and Aspartame is used in Diet Coke products in Japan.

Before that, Japan had "Coke Light" and had to add sugar because it wasn't widely accepted.

And the ONLY reason Stevia is widely used in Japan is the brief ban on all artificial sweeteners in the 1970s. Due to knee-jerk reactionism, no less.

Splenda is sucralose
Nutrasweet is aspartame

Splenda is sucralose
Nutrasweet is aspartame

Actually they use 3.

Nutrasweet / Aspartame
Splenda / Sucralose
(No brand name) / Acesulfame Potassium (AKA : AceK)

They use a mix of artifical sweeteners because they each have a distinct "sweet" taste, and a distinct aftertaste. By mixing them in small(er) quantities, the aftertastes blend together and are less noticeable, and the sweet tastes blend together and taste more like natural sweetener.
