Lifters rattling...?

What engine, what air temp, and what oil for starters?

The older Volvo 4-cylinders had a very diesel-like idle sound, especially when cold. Other than that, it shouldn't sound too much different than usual, other than possibly idling faster until it warms up.

My car has a direct injection so it sounds like a diesel all the time. The high pressure fuel pump and injectors are the loudest I've ever heard...

Well then I guess its normal this engine is fuel injected and it revs a bit higher on idle when I first start it up. But sometimes it can be louder on other days sometimes hotter. Maybe I did not notice it before but when I first heard it i was like wtf.

The engine is a 3.6L V6 FSI

also truedelta.com has

The "Diesel" sound on cold start. Dealer stated earlier VIN did not match engines with valve issue. Stated this time start up noise fixed via software update. Engine noise is now gone

which is why am wondering and how could a software update fix that . But I dont really know to much about all the engine stuff, I would love to learn.

You'd be amazed at how much could be controlled by software. I've been slowly getting more and more into tuning this year, and it's very enjoyable, especially when your car is turbo'd. You have a lot of potential for gains.

The key here is not that your engine is fuel injected, but that it is direct fuel injection. With the word "direct" making a giant difference.
