Diesel cars... what is there?

TDI Jetta, TDI Golf, Don't know if the TDI Passat is available, and the Toureg no longer comes with the V10 Diesel engine.

There the Big 2 and a half trucks, and the Jeep Liberty has a diesel option.

I was going to suggest Jeep Liberty as an option, as the only others I know of are the Veedubs.... I actually would like a TDI, but I still don't think they are reliable enough.

Yeah, I knew about the trucks, but they aren't the best commuter vehicles. I do wish Ford, Chevy, or Dodge would offer the top of the line diesel in one of their smaller trucks.

Why do you want Diesel?

It's like $0.30 more per gallon than the premium gasoline here where I'm at....

Because I average 58-60 mpg. That's why.
That, and they're very torquey engines.

Better fuel economy, a TDI golf can easily get 45 mpg highway. And you can be cool and invest in biodiesel. 😀

edit: what Phil said. 🙂

Diesel VW's seem to get 40-50mpg. 😉

It's a bit under what 93 is here, and that's what I fill my cars with now.

Hmm...didn't know they got that much better gas mileage.

The Liberty's MPG sucks big time, I don't think it even breaks into the 30's.

As far as high MPG diesels, VW Golf & Jetta are the only players, but there are some problems with them.
-no more legendary reliability because of the electronic engine control systems (on top of the whole crappy VW quality issues)
-they require synthetic oil (diesel spec) and oil changes are a bitch (can you say $50 at the dealership? cuz Jim Bob's oil & lube won't touch them)
-Hard to get a deal because everyone wants one.

The big 3 all say they're bringing out 1/2 ton diesel pickups in the net few years, current diesel engines are too heavy for a 1/2 ton truck.

Honda has a diesel Accord in the UK, look for it in a couple of years. I'm a diesel fanboy and the idea of a Honda diesel is pretty exciting.

Best bet right now is a conventional gas car, like a Civic with a MT, IMHO.

I didn't even mean 1/2 ton diesels, although that'd be cool. I was implying putting a large displacement diesel in a Colorado/Ranger/Dakota.

Heh, if you DO get a Diesel anything, find your local truckstop that you can run a tab at. Diesel is cheaper there than at street level stations and they'll bill you monthly instead of having to take your lashings on a regular basis.
