Dies when i let my foot off the gas

HDs suck

I took a 450 mile trip yesterday, and arrived safely to my destination. But, my problem lies with what seems to be the idle speed. Ok, here's the deal. I checked the oil b4 the trip, and it didn't show on the dipstick. I didn't have access to oil at the time, so i got 150 miles b4 i stopped for gas and oil. It ran fine until i pulled into the gas station and it died pulling into a parking spot. It WAS out of oil i believe, and i put 2 quarts in. BUT, ever since then, (directly after putting oil in even), the thing will only run when i give it gas. It stayed that way all day.

Today!
It idles at about 800 rpms. (if i rev teh engine up, then let off the gas all of a sudden, it will go down to 200-150 rpms, but jump back up again to 800.)

Does anyone have a good idea on what the problem could be? anything i left out or wasn't clear on?

If you were only 2 quarts low, you were lucky. Don't drive it again if it is any lower than that before adding oil.

You probably have the 3.9 liter V-6. Had one in my 1991 Dakota. You should change the throttle position sensor. It is probably going out. Mine did. Easy to change. Throttle Position Sensor.

Also, might want to change this while you are at it: Idle Air Control Valve. This also directly controls your idle speed. If you have access to a Dodge repair manual, and a voltmeter, there are tests you can run to determine if these are OK prior to just changing them out.....

TPS sensor, also know as the throttle positioning sensor. The computer has no idea when the throttle is at so it guesses, guesses wrog, the truck dies, or idle dips really low.

Is your check engine light on? If so get the codes out, may be more then one and can be it and o2, or just o2, but to me sounds like a tps.

As Funboy42 said try checking for computer codes. Link for instructions.
It could also be the IAC (Idle Air Control valve) they tend to get sticky when older.

I'm not familiar with your particular car, but adding 2 quarts to mine when it isn't showing on the dipstick could still be overfilling it. Overfilling could also give problems similar to what you're experiencing and would explain why the problem's magnitude decreased over a day's time as some of the oil burned off. Just an alternative conspiracy theory. 😛

I'd put money on the Idle Air Control Valve sticking or that TPS sensor. Both are common idle issues on that make/model.
