Die2Nite is the english version of horde.fr. In it, you and 39 randomly selected players are thrown together into a town in the middle of the wastelands. There you must work together to hold off the nightly zombie invasions as they attempt to batter down your defenses and feast on your sweet flesh. Death is inevitable because you can not hold out indefinitely. But when you die, you are then respawned in a new town and any accolades you have earned will carry over with you. Then you begin the fight for survival anew.
Each day, every player receives 6 AP. This can be replenished by eating, drinking, or taking drugs (which can get you addicted). Your APs are used to move about the wasteland so you can search for useful items, building materials, or weapons. They are also used to construct useful buildings in your town. Buildings will either add to the defenses of the town or confer some special ability to the players - for instance a workshop allows you to take raw materials you've found and convert them into more useful building construction materials.
Every town has it's own forum which the members can communicate on. This is extremely important since communication is key to survival. Coordinating building projects so AP is not wasted on bad construction projects is paramount. As the game progresses and you exhaust the wasteland squares in the immediate vicinity of your town, you'll also need to organize expeditions to trek farther outside to gather the resources you need.
Come midnight, the zombies will assault your town. The gates must be closed or else the zombies will enter the town unhindered. Players who are locked outside the gates will become zombie food so you better get back to town before that happens (most towns organize a gatekeeper role and it's usual for them to close the gate 10-20 minutes before midnight). BTW, "midnight" is not your real 12PM. The game will assign you into a town with other players in the same general time zone. My last few games have all had a "midnight" of 5PM local time. So you don't have to stay up to play this game.
So far, it's a very fun game that doesn't take too much time to play well. 5-10 minutes at most a day. The game does vary because item "drops" are randomly generated, so one game you might find some key items early on and in another you won't. It's F2P, but if you do purchase the account upgrade (monthly fee, it's in British Pounds and seems quite expensive given the scope of the game), you can unlock the three hero classes which give you some special abilities that can be used once a day.
So who wants to Die2Nite?
