Didn't someone make a stripped down, optimized version of XP?

I thought that there was a 'lite' version of XP that disabled all of the junk and left it with only the necessities. Here's my dilemna: I have an old K6-2 333MHz laptop with 160MB of RAM and the world's slowest 3.2GB hard drive. Windows 98 runs acceptably, Windows 2000 doesn't run so great, and XP runs like utter crap. For instance:

After waiting for an eternity for the machine to boot, regardless of the OS (although much faster with 98 SE), it takes the following lengths of time to simply launch Internet Explorer 6:

98SE: ~5 seconds
2k Pro: ~25 seconds :Q
XP Pro: ~70 seconds !

I'd run Linux, but I need a few Windows-only apps. My greatest problem is that I'm using an 802.11b USB card, and Windows 98 handles that terribly. It has to spend 5 minutes shutting down and rebooting just to enter a freaking WEP key  XP = No configuring, no rebooting.

Is there an installation of a slimmed/speedy installation of XP Pro? I really thought there was, but I had no luck with Google, and I don't have the time to research and build my own XP-lite slipstreamed disc.

Use Linux with WINE for your Windows-only apps. If you don't have time to build your own slipstreamed version, then I don't think you have another [legal] option.

I'm sure the biggest piece of your problem is your slow laptop hard drive. But like MrChad suggested you can probably help to speed things up by disabling any unnecisary features, etc.

Slipstreaming a SP2 install CD and reinstalling may also help. Though I've never used it I hear AutoStreamer is a fast and easy application for slipstreaming.

No installation, but n-lite is very user friendly - you should be able to build your own stripped down ISO in less than an hour with it.
