It had enough bandwidth to do 5 channel LPCM 16 bit 48 KHz, so that's why I'm asking.

Copy protection as well as bandwidth to handle uncompressed HD audio formats.
With a background in pro audio I'm glad to see it go for many more reasons, but these two are the most relevant to most.
