So i keep my mailing adress at my mom's house. Didn't get the notice until after i was supposed to report for jury duty.
I know this is techinically a crime, even if not on purpose. so what do i do now? i probably have a bench warrant or some crap out. how do i find out how to clear it up?

call the courthouse and ask them... did they send it certified mail? that's how they do it where i'm from... I'm sure it's not a huge deal... all you can do is call and ask.

If it's your first one nothing will (probably) happen.

Bench warrants for something as miniscule as this would be such a waste of our law's resources.

If they didn't send it certified mail, I would NOT call the courthouse. If the summons is sent by regular mail, they have no evidence you ever received it. My father used to routinely ignore jury duty summons sent by regular mail (not that I condone this - I think jury duty is important and a civic duty).

tell that to about 20 or so people that did that and were sent warrents and were told to either show up and explain your actions to the judge or a officer would help you to court.

needless to say about 90% of them got the full power of the court on them. Only maybe a couple had REAL reasons they could not be there and even then were told to call next time, and they were all assigned NEW dates to report for jury duty.

Reason was so many people did not show up they did not have enough to fill all the jury pools, and it was not the first time it has happened.

Around here you get arrested for contempt of court. Of course if they hadn't sent the notice certified mail and you hadn't signed for it you would have a way out of it.

Nothing probably. If you're worried (same thing happened to me, and I was), you can call and simply schedule another date.

barely anyone shows up for jury duty in harris county.

it's sad, everyone bitches about run away juries and outrageous court verdicts but no one wants to go when they actually have a chance to be a part of it.

No-show jurors called in to explain themselves
  • Patrick Smith was sent a summons by the Lake County Sheriff's Department ordering him to show up for jury duty at least two weeks before a vehicular homicide trial was to begin.

The Concord Township resident failed to appear that day.

On Tuesday, Smith was called into Lake County Common Pleas Judge Eugene A. Lucci's courtroom to explain why he didn't respond to the summons.

"I was in Florida," Smith told the judge. "My parents were wiped out in the hurricane, and I purchased them a motor home. I let the stress level get to me."

Although Lucci said he bought that excuse, he still fined Smith $25 for not bothering to call his office and explain beforehand.

    But Smith was lucky.

He could have been arrested for contempt of court.

Smith was one of 26 people who left the judge and his staff scrambling to find last-minute replacements to serve as jurors during trials on Oct. 25 and Nov. 15.

One by one, 20 of those people showed up to try to make amends with the judge...
