Yikes. I've been to Africa, actually seen all of these big dangerous creatures. But you're more likely to be killed by an insect.

Not directly.... it's the pathogens they potentially spread that can be dangerous.

Even so carrying effective bug-repellent is every bit as important as bringing along a loaded rifle (or at least a .45) when on safari.
