I've heard they kill quite a lot of people, even that they are one of the most deadly animals around...though never been quite sure whether that was true or one of those 'invented amazing facts'. Hope the kid's not badly injured.

Not directly.... it's the pathogens they potentially spread that can be dangerous.

Even so carrying effective bug-repellent is every bit as important as bringing along a loaded rifle (or at least a .45) when on safari.
