Didn't plug 4pin power connector all the way - something small fried

Got a free P4 system from a friend, MSI Sis661FX chipset motherboard (not 100% on model), P4 2.6, etc. He had a small power supply in there, and as I had a 350 watt antec lying around I swapped it in. The machine loaded fine with the old power supply. The space near the cpu was pretty tight with an external fan, and I stupidly tried to wiggle the 4 pin psu power connector in without being sure that it was secure.

It wasn't, and obviously the machine didn't post. I fiddled around with a few things again, same deal, then checked the power connector which was not at all plugged in.

The system posted on the first try after this, but locked up pretty far into windows installation. Restarted, locked up again during initial windows startup (following setup).

After this I got into windows, and was checking the motherboard for a model # to get drivers, and noticed a small black burned spot right by the front fan plug, on the motherboard. You know that ashy black stuff that comes from burned electronic components. This seemed to be a tiny part. Anyone have any idea what could have burned up because of the 4pin not being plugged in? If it's just a heat indicator or something I'm not worried. But if it's anything that could compromise the system I'm gonna dump the motherboard and salvage what I can from the machine.

Any help would be appreciated, I know it's kind of vague. Thanks in advance

bump, anyone? It still boots and I haven't tried leaving it on for stability testing, would I be risking other components (ram, cpu, psu)?

From the description, I'd bet the damage was already there. Trying to run the system without the ATX12V cable plugged in doesn't normally do damage, plus that lower-front corner of the board isn't where the CPU power circuitry is. If it works and it was a freebie, I'd just go with it
