Didn't plan to OC...

I had no plans to OC my E8400, because I absolutely do not need extra speed for anything that I do. The 3.0GHz covers all my needs and then some. But when I first booted up for some reason my multiplier was set at 8.5 instead of 9, so when I went to change it, I went ahead and tried going for 9x400 just for fun (planned on going into bios immediately after rebooting to check cpu temp and shut down if anything looked wrong because I'm inexperienced).

To my surprise, my processor ran steady at 3.6 with no other tweaking whatsoever. I booted into windows and ran prime95 for an hour and a half or so just to make sure. I checked temps and it's barely hotter than when I ran it at 3.0.

I'm intrigued. I'll read the OC guide, fool around some more, and update =D

No, the only cure is covering yourself in Arctic Silver 5 and rolling around in jelly beans according to my witch doctor.

Note: Do not cover yourself in AS5. It can't be a good idea.

Serious note at the OP, you'll need to run Prime95 longer than an hour and a half to confirm stability. I've had the CPU error out after the 8 hour mark or so. Overnight is good, 24 hours is better if you have the patience.

Jellybeans?!?

I heard it was AS5 + M&Ms. Now, who's giving out bad info around here?

Heh, you elitists with your fancy-shmancy medical coverage plans @#$%!

Not all us common folks can afford the premium platinum plan to get our cures. :p

Looks like I'm off to buy 5 gallons of AS5 and some jelly beans (and M&M's for good measure)/

It would be helpful if you could also test M&Ms and jelly beans to settle that debate as well.

My E8400 booted at 8.5x multi the first time on the same board, for me. I left it at 9x333. I've been hankering to change it and you're tempting me even more with this post.

(edit - GA-EP35-D3SP ... same thing pretty much.)

Pfft. I had errors 27th hour into testing.

Released in 1964. I love watching those old James Bond movies and just marveling at the world captured in the background that operates without the use of desktop PC's and email and cellphones...and yet they have every technological feature (aside from the one's I mentioned) that we do...cars, planes, microwaves, TV, etc.

Talk about derailing a thread :p

I just wanted to comment on stability testing. Prime95 is nice, but it's the the absolute be all and end all of things. I doubt that if you get an error 8 hours into prime, that you will ever encounter stability issues. Perhaps a little longer then 1.5 hours is warranted, but for my own OC I never did more then 4 hours, and haven't had a bsod or unexplainable crash as of yet ( 2 years later )

Well you have to admit that it boils down to which component in your system has the least remaining stability margin when passing 8hrs or less of Prime95 as to whether you are more or less likely to experience BSOD or reboots down the road not to mention that naturally it is going to be application dependent.

If your application of interest is not remotely similiar in compute nature to Prime95 then you can't expect Prime95 stability to indicate anything about stability with your application.

For example I can pass 48hrs of Prime95 at an overclock setting that will turn around and fail when running a computational chemistry program such as Gaussian 2003.

But if the most challenging thing I throw at my overclocked computer is email, the occasional game (which are not likely to ever peg CPU utilization at 100%), and watching youtube clips then yeah Prime95 stability is going to guarantee my applications in this case won't push the system over the stability line in the sand.

You should leave it be while running Prime95. Anything you do on the system while it is running Prime95 will actually cause the program to be less intense on your components, which will potentially give you a false postive for stability.

what... 2 years and no big crashes? Crap.. I sneeze and look up to see a BSOD. Do you just run notepad on your computer :p

I run lots of games, AV software + funky drivers, I love multitasking, etc. My idea of stability is not crashing all day.
