Didn't ATI say Crossfire cards were going to be $349?

I could swear the X800 Crossfire reviews were saying the X850 Crossfire Master card was going to be $349, not the big bucks they originally forecast? Now on ATIs website they're $399.00.

Wonder what's up with that? Anyone seen a Crossfire motherboard to put this on yet?

Firing Squad had it at $349
ATI has adjusted their pricing on CrossFire since their June launch, with X850 XT CrossFire officially retailing for $349

Why do you care, Rollo? Just curious. Are you looking to buy one? If so, why in the world would you want to buy a X850 Crossfire setup? Even the biggest ATi fanboy wouldn't be foolish enough to buy that.

They don't really say what boards won't work...
from the ATI site:

Only three components: a CrossFire Ready motherboard ideally based on the ATI Radeon® Xpress 200 chipset, a compatible Radeon graphics card, and a related Radeon CrossFire Edition co-processor board.

It seems that non-Xpress 200 chipset motherboards might work, but they don't sound to confident about that.

LOL, there's a link to newegg on ATI's X1800XL where to buy site, but it just takes you to the main page. Needless to say, there is no X1800XL available at the egg. I really don't mean to pick on ATI too much, but it really looks like they thought over everything for the CrossFire/x1k launch, except for the hardware. -doh!

Well, they are selling the X850 Crossfire Master cards now, so when motherboards arrive, that will be a "paper launch" no more.

I thought people would be interested they're for sale now, as there was some controversy over them not being for sale?

I just got an ad from newegg in my email today- they have them for $449! ($100 higher than ATI stated, $50 higher than ATI themselves)

Although I suppose if newegg actually has them and ATIs stock is spotty, supply/demand kicks in.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...-neemail100705&ATT=RadeonX850CrossFire

Still no motherboards I know of though, so I don't get the point of buying a card now. Prices usuall fall rather than rise, so why not wait until motherboards are available and order together?

The only point I can see for buying now is posting "Oh yeah, got my Crossfire cards! When that motherboard comes out, I'll be rockin'"

Looks like you're talking to yourself LOL, whats your tolerance level before you "jump in"? You appear to be anxious for a "buy".........

rbV5- I think it's safe to say I won't be buying a X800 Crossfire set. With 3800+/6800GT SLI in my son's box and 4600+/7800GTX SLI in mine, I think I'm set for a while.

ATI needed to get the Crossfire motherboards out before "maybe October 2005" to get my money this year, next year, who knows? I have nothing against them and think the X1800XT will be a big step in the right direction for them if they can get it out in quantity.

OIC, I mistakenly took your myopic "interest" as an anxious buyer ready to pounce when the price was right.....sorry;)

"myopic"

How is my post "myopic"? (unable to see issue clearly)

ATI said the cards would be $549 when paper launched back in May, then they said they would be $349 when they paper launched it for the second time in September, then they priced it at $399 when they actually launched it in October.

I don't think anyone can deny the accuracy of my assessment; they paper launched it twice at two different prices than they actually sold it for. This is known as noting "facts" not being "myopic". One might think you are being "defensive" as you employed a pejorative adjective to describe my interest when my post is clearly straightforward and factual.

Perhaps you don't think it is "unusual" or "postworthy" the product paper launched twice at different prices, I do.

As I've posted nothing untrue, and have added no opinion or negative connotation to the noting of these facts, I fail to see the need for the pejorative description of my assessment?

So it's still paper'd launch because you can't buy a motherboard? How exactly is that ATI's fault? They don't make the mobos and the Xpress 200 chipsets have been shipping for awhile.

I also find it hard to believe that any old SLI or dual PCIe board wouldn't work. All of the Crossfire tech is in the cards compositing chip and the drivers so I would think any dual PCIe slot mobo would do. This is probably just a marketing move to sell more chipsets with their cards.

What? Quote of where I said that? Actually I implied it's not a paper launch anymore by stating they're selling the cards?

I didn't say it was, why are you saying I did?

OK?

I disagree with this, and think if you are going to post an idea that directly contradicts what websites and ATI themselves have said, you should post a link to the results of someone who has done this successfully.

I "think" a lot of things, what matters is backing up what you "think" with some sort of evidence.

It's dangerous to post you "think" this will work, someone with a SLI motherboard might read your post, spend their hard earned money on an ATI Crossfire master card, and find out that Jasonja "thinking" something should work doesn't mean it will, and they'll be out the money. :(

LOL, your enthusiast zeal to "expose" Crossfire with your Capt. Obvious posting and reports of unavailability, pricing, competetiveness, historical ranking on a product you've shown over and over again that you are not interested in.....seems somewhat myopic to me...but hey, whatever floats your boat....by all means continue:thumbsup:

Whats with Nvidia's shimmering issues and bad shadows in games? ANyone who buys a Nvidia card is obviously getting an inferior product, not the High Quality product Nvidia states it is. Until Nvidia fixes their issues, I consider all their cards paper launches.

yeah, you can't blame ATI for newegg's price gouging ;)

My X800XL shimmers like crazy in spots while playing BF2. Not to mention my shadows in BF2 (especially in helicopters) look blocky and 2Dish as well.

Both ATI and NVidia have 16xAF issues.
