FIRE GL? X1

Revolutionary graphics architecture

-256MB DDR memory to meet the needs of the most demanding CAD/CAM engineers and professional animators
-256-bit memory interface removes hardware performance bottleneck and provides end users with faster 3D graphics
-Industry's first 8-pixel pipeline architecture provides twice the rendering power of any competing product
-First 128-bit floating point precision frame buffer allows complex operations without loosing precision for photo-realistic renderings
-Supports new AGP 8X standard, providing a two way high-speed interface between the graphics subsystem and the workstation (2.0 GB/sec)

256MB 256-bit DDR .... im speechless .... and little drop in performance with 4xAA&16xAF this is going to rip up the workstation field. This baby is prob gunna be $1200+ but it will be worth it! Just wanted to show you guys what we will be seeing on the R300 workstation side of things .... feel free to post opinions ... just dont crap on this thread :D

I wonder what will differ from a regular 9700 (looks to be a pretty fair workstation card in its own right)?

Well Im figuring the added 128MB of ram and prob a higher clock like the 8500 : 8800

Radeon 8500 275/275Mhz
Fire GL 8800 300/300Mhz

Radeon 9700 350+/700+Mhz
Fire GL X1 400?/800?Mhz

Just guessing really .... but most defently it will have higher clocks .... ATi likes to show off there workstation cards with higher clocks :D

Actually, the R300 previews we've seen from ATI's HQ, the Radeon 9700 was at 325MHz if I can recall correctly and they are working very hard to make sure that the production boards are at or above a core clock of 300MHz...

The Ram only needs to be clocked at 300MHz (600MHz DDR) to get the 19.2GB/sec (roughly 20GB/sec) bandwidth...

So that is at least 300MHz core and 300Mhz ram... although I think it would be good to go 350/350 ;) or at least 325 core (like the one Anand got to play with) and 325 memory like the Ti 4600... (with ability to over-clock as well of course ;))

Whatever it ends up being I doubt the Fire GL X1 will be clocked much higher if it is not just clocked the same as the 9700... ATI put 8800 in the FireGL 8800's name for a reason, it was faster than the 8500... Naming their new workstation product FireGL X1 and not FireGL 9800 or 9900 or whatever allows them to keep the same speeds me thinks... The product will obviously be tweaked to perform in CAD environments and what not, and like the 8800 and 8700, I'm sure ATI will market them with their design it and play it spiel.

Doubling the ram should be costly but I doubt it'll push prices to $1,200+... why do you think they are just converting their high end gaming GPU into a workstation product? $1,200 is how much the FireGL 4 costs, a product designed strait up to be a workstation beast...not a flagship for a company's high end gaming GPU. Besides, if it performs well enough to school other solutions as ATI is already claiming, they would be crazy to price it that high. I think $600-$800 is a more realistic figure for the X1. That seems to be the introductory price point of nVidia's Quadro boards as well as the FireGL 8800 upon it's debut...

Great news! This is more like what I'm looking for. I suspected that my disappointment with the lack of dual-DVI on the 9700 would be assuaged by the next FireGL card. This will be the replacement for my FireGL4... ROCK ON, ATI! :D

*Squats and takes a crap on the tread*...... J/K

sounds very nice, but i hope nvidia gets out of the hole they are in, the nv30 sounds VERY nice =)

IIRC the fireGL 8800 is clocked 250/290 core/mem, so its no supercharged 8500...... and offers no tV-out, the 9700 will have up to 256 MB of memory as well. The other specs just match the 9700, I'm wondering what truly will set the workstation apart from just the standard 9700.

No the 8800 is 300/600 ... look at any review ..... and for the Radeon 9700 being at 325/620 i know it was ... and that was a sample if i recall. I have heard they can get higher speeds 350+/700+ out of it ... there are 2ns chips for god sakes.

These 2 reviews of the actual cards Link Link, as well info gleaned from my friends in the field say otherwise. I'm guessing the FIRE GL X1, will be another mid-level workstation card in the same vein as the FIRE GL 8800, and considerably cheaper than $1000, otherwise, it'll die a slow death on the shelf with the 9700 well under $400 at its launch and Matrox, nv30's and quatro's well below its pricepoint.
