Really? Most people I know don't use OSes with activations... To Hades with Windows XP!

Debian all the way.

Because of your numerous posts saying essentially this Nothinman, I've decided to try Debian. :D Only thing is that it seems to be a bit out of date; X 4.1, etc. I'll have to figure out how the heck to get my Radeon 8500 working right on it...

When you are using Debian the way you install packages is by having a file called sources.list in your /etc/apt directory, you can choose to have in this file the ftp or http address of where your system should get the pacakges from. In my case I use testing and therefore I get newer packages than from the stable repositories. In other words you don't have to use old packages with Debian.

I hope this helps,

I have 5 computers in the house (two are my parents'): four of them run some distribution of Linux, one dual-boots with Windows 2000 (retail -- purchased in 2001), and one runs Windows XP, given out at the latest Compaq/HP Codewars but without a license to go with it. I consider it legal.

Thanks, pitupepito2000. Anyone have a way of setting up the Radeon 8500LE in Debian Woody?

Yes. Everytime. I purchased Win95 when it came out, and bought both upgrades to 98 (98 and 98SE). Later on, I bought Windows 2000 and it is the one I'm using now...

I use Linux and WinME and have paid for both, though I mostly use the freely downloadable Linux distros.

Legally I don't think it matters what you believe, if you don't have a license you can't legally run the software.

I have 2 personal rigs running XP and 1 running Win2k, all activated and legit licences with legit Office XP licences as well. I'll soon have another XP rig and 2 new linux boxes to add to the fleet, they'll be legit as well.

Yes, I paid for both Windows XP Pro and Debian. I've upgraded Debian, but I have the 2.2r1 CDs which I paid for, and my Debian installation is based off of them.

Yes, even though I did not have to pay for several of them. The Windows versions I use at work are all legit, as is the Windows 98 install on my laptop (although, I probably shouldn't be using it since I got it second hand, just haven't had time to fix it). I support OpenBSD by purchasing every release on official cds.
