The first lighter, Döbereiner's lamp, was invented by Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner in 1823. It stayed in production until 1880. The first friction match, which can be ignited on virtually any surface (i.e. fabric) was created in 1827, 4 years after the lighter.[1]

It wasn't particularly a "cigarette" lighter, it was an industrial lighter that evolved into a household lighter. But I know what you mean.

File it under Obvious, Cap'n.

Seriousry, matchsticks essentially require the invention of gunpowerder, n'est ce pas? Plus a way to get it to stick to the stick in a rather specific way to work.

A lighter is essentially just an age old lamp with attached flint device.

I are dubious that lighters did not come significantly earlier but I suppose it comes down to definition.

The OP clearly works for Zippo... sales are down right now, so they are trying to get something going. He has done this before when he worked at Ronsonol.
