Did you know they're building a tunnel 800 feet under from NYC to LI ?

They already started in the Manhattan end... saw it on the Discovery Channel last night (between watching that and my Caps play) ... plans are in the works for a new high-speed train system to replace the Long Island Rail Road. It'll drop the daily LI <=> NYC commute by 40 minutes. They had to dig this deep because of all the sub-level basements Manhattan buildings come with, as well as the pipes, etc. that exist between there and Queens --> towns on the island.

NO WONDER THEY'RE RAISING THE FARES. ;)

This would be so cool... get to NYC in 5-10 minutes... where it usually takes close to an hour from here.

That's pretty deep. Do you think they'll have escalators to get down there ?

They mentioned in any given day, the new system would be able to handle 40,000 commuters... that'd be a lot to take via elevator, don't you think ?

No, but in the same show, they were talking about "smart trains" for the NYC subways... where a sensor on the bottom of each smart train would identify where it was on the tracks for safety reasons. All of this is controlled by computers. All you need for a terrorist to do is hack in there... and boom goes the trains...

It's 800 feet below ground - not 800 feet long.

They should make one across the US. Each state makes one and then they connect them all up. lol. Imagine, one fair gets ya from Texas to NY.

I'm not so sure I'd trust my life to magnetic levitation...

Who wants to take a train 800 feet down. Everybody would fall to the front of the car. An elevator would be better.
