I was doing some research on Nobel Peace Prize winners and found out that in 1994 Yasser Arafat won it jointly with Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin.

So I guess they had peace there in 1994. So what happend since then? Why is it so violent over there in the middle east these days? And what happened to Yitzhak Rabin? I Heard he was killed. But by who?

Did I miss something? The plot thickens... I guess. Oh, as for your question, because the Nobel Peace Prize is a joke? Other than that I don't know.

>> Just goes to show you how much a Nobel Peace prize is worth.

It is worth a great deal, and is a reflection on the idea that those who are chosen for one had at one point
been instrumental in working towards peace. It is no gaurantee of sainthood, or that the people chosen
might not have other agendas to promote later in life. Many of those chosen for the prize would
disagree that they are not really qualified to accept it.

And as unpopular as Arafat is at the moment, can you truly name one other person who could have done a better
job at least trying to work for peace in the middle east from the Palestinian side?

Maybe the people that get the Nobel Peace Prize but not the ones that get it for science.

Regardless of who he is and what he stands for (and I'm not saying that's good or bad, just put it aside for a sec), what action would I take, if I wanted to see the most carnage and destruction in the Middle East? I'd shoot Arafat in the head.

There are people on the Israil cabinet who openly want him assassinated! He may be inefficient at keeping the peace, but he's riding the proverbial horse of Muslim extremists, and he's the only one with any sort of reigns, frail as they may be.

OK, I'm gonna answer:

Arafat got the Nobel-prize for his work to bring peace to the Middle-East. At that time things looked good, both sides were willing to talk peace and progress was being made. Things had a turn for the worse the Rabin was murdered by an jewish extremist who thought that peace with palestinians was out of the question. Things got from bad to worse when Ariel "The Butcher" Sharon got elected. The current conflict started when he visited some muslim holy-sites and made some unkind comments regarding the palestinians.

Is it no longer possible to have an informed debate about something on these boards without it being interrupted by immature squabbling?? This is the last time I participate in this thread.

1) Calling Ariel Sharon "The Butcher" just means you have bought into the propaganda dished out by the anti-Israel forces. Arafat has done much worse than Sharon ever thought of and does not get a moniker of that type, why?

2) Sharon visted a Israeli holy site and the Palestinisans used that as an excuse to start an infitada. Now ask yourself which side does not want peace.

"The Butcher" is the name given to Sharon by the survivors of the massacre in Chatra and Chabila refugee-camps. Ariel Sharon in personally responsible for massacring thousands of innocent civilians, including women and children. And before you start claiming that "that's just anti-semite propaganda!", may I remind you that Sharon was found guilty by official israeli investigation to the incident. There are currently efforts underway to bring Sharon to the International War-Crimes Tribunal in Hague.

Yes I did know Arafat won the Nobel Prize. Why? Do you mean why he won it or why I know it? I already answered why Arafat won it. Why I knew about it? What's there to answer? I follow the news, that's why.

Well, his estimation was exaggerated, but actually quite a few of the science prizes have been ridiculous too. For instance, they gave it to some nut who tried to heal dementia by inducing fever (which he did by giving the patients malaria). Also the guy who came up with the idea of frontal lobotomies.

Sorry I can't recall their names or any more cases like that, but I'm 99% sure they are factual. ;)
