Concerning the salt, it's not bad for you, per se, not even when you've got high blood pressure.
Excessive amounts of salt can cause you to retain water, which can help drive your blood pressure higher. That's why a lot of doctors prescribe a blood pressure medication that's designed to help you NOT retain water (think they're called diurectics, spelling may be different), especially for their patients that aren't willing to change their high salt diets.
Unfortunately, one of the side effects of those medications is the warning that you not expose yourself to excessive amounts of sunlight. Not really sure why, but it probably messes with your body's melannin uv blocking abilities. Since I work a job that takes me outside a lot, I had to tell my physician that I wasn't going to take those pills when she prescribed them.
So yes, if you're in your 40's or later, especially if you're on blood pressure medication, you should limit your salt intake, especially if you're one of those people that consume a lot (you've seen those people......the ones that salt EVERYTHING, even if it already has salt on it!!). If you know someone that has recently cut down on their salt intake, warn them to make sure they're taking either a multi-vitamin/mineral every day, or a specific supplement to make certain they're getting their iodine requirement every day. Why?? Because the reason they make iodized salt is to make certain that everyone gets enough in their diet, to prevent gout (aka goiter). Google it, you'll see. I've known a handful of older people, usually in their 50's, who suddenly develop gout when they go on a low sodium diet. I tell them to make certain they're taking enough iodine, and in every case, they've come back to me a month or so later, and thanked me for telling them about it, since it cured their gout. Seems doctors, for all the training they get, tend to forget about this affliction....probably because it's not as widespread as it used to be, and can tend to seem like other afflictions in older folks.
Oh yeah, and the wax lined stomach thing is complete CR@P.
