A whole state full of people on verge of falling into the ocean and people talk trash about New Orleans being built below sea level... (yeah Katrina was bad but just imagine...)

Where this earthquake occured was either on the Hayward Fault or a minor fault adjacent to it. The Hayward Fault is generally acknowledged as having the potential for releasing the worst earthquake in terms of damage and destruction in the history of the USA. If a 7.3 quake (thought to be the greatest that can be expected on this fault) were to occur centered in the most populous areas (and not terribly deep) it would be apt to be the worst catastrophe in the history of the nation. I live about 2 miles from that fault. :Q

You know, AFAIK all that talk about California falling into the ocean is rubbish. It will take many millions of years for that kind of change. There are islands 30 or so miles north of me that were 30 or so miles south of me some 30 million years ago. In that timespan there have been around 100,000 earthquakes of magnitude similar to that of the great S.F. earthquake of 1906.

That fault (Hayward Fault) runs right under Memorial Stadium, where the Cal Bears play football.

ATOT News Staff reporting live on the scene. Preliminary reports are sketchy. Automated equipment reports say 3.7 magnitude 2 miles from Berkeley.

Switched on mobile scanning equipment. Now tracking mobile news crews, fire and ambulance and CB radio channels.
