Did you exchange a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

One of the times I was listening to it, my five year old said after hearing this part: "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl"
"I like the way they made those words"
Of course, her favorite song right now is Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Take all your overgrown infants away somewhere
And build them a home, a little place of their own.
The Fletcher Memorial Home for Incurable Tyrants and Kings.

They can appear to themselves every day
On closed circuit T.V.
To make sure they're still real.
It's the only connection they feel.
"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, Reagan and Haig,
Mr. Begin and friend, Mrs. Thatcher and Paisly,
"Hello Maggie!"
Mr. Brezhnev and party.
"Who's the bald chap?"
The ghost of McCarthy,
And the memories of Nixon.
"Good-bye!"
And now, adding colour, a group of anonymous Latin-
American meat packing glitterati.

Did they expect us to treat them with any respect?
They can polish their medals and sharpen their smiles,
And amuse themselves playing games for awhile.
Boom boom, bang bang, lie down you're dead.

Safe in the permanent gaze of a cold glass eye
their favourite toy
They'll be good girls and boys
In the Fletcher Memorial Home for colonial wasters of life and limb.

Is everyone in?
Are you having a nice time?
Now the final solution can be applied.

Pink Floyd has been one of my favorite bands since I discovered the joys of music in the early 70's. That particular song has always been one of my favorites as a great song, as well as a tribute to original singer/song writer Syd Barrett (along with shine on you crazy diamond from the same album).

What the heck? That song doesn't make any sense.

May I suggest you listen to some nickelback songs instead? Or maybe Nelly is more your cup of tea...

"Us and Them" is my favorite song of all time, but "Wish You were Here" is right up there too. One of the saddest songs there is out there, especially if you are lonely or have lost a loved one :(.
