We had a picnic to celebrate my daughter's softball championship yesterday.
We got the four wheelers out and were taking the kids for rides around the field and through the orchard. I let them all stop and pick an apple along the way.
Out of 10 kids aged 6-12, none had ever picked an apple. Mind you, this is not L.A. or NYC, it's a rural community around a city of 10,000.
How many of you have ever picked an apple off the tree?

when we were little me and my friends would sit in our neighbors apple tree, (which was left over from an apple orchard that was plowed over to build our homes) for hours picking and eating apples. i ended up with plenty of belly aches

we still have an apple tree on the farm, but the apples were much bigger & juicier when i was young. it was the easiest tree to climb, too. my Grandma used to make apple pie from those apples. i'm hungry.

My grandparents own an apple orchard in central Washington, so yeah, I've picked just about every type of apple on the market. Nothing is as tasty and delicious as a fresh picked apple still warm from the sun. Crisp, juicy.....

OMFG yesterday i saw the cutest little calf evar. it was with it's mom in the pasture and it's legs were still unsteady and everything, or so it seemed. the white was so much whiter than the mom's white, and the black spots were blacker. i wish i could have taken some pics. we need digital cameras built into our eyes, stat. more pics.

Naw, they had to see cows on the way to my house.
I should have said "rural farming community" earlier.
Cows outnumber people out here. :)
Most of the kids live in Treasure Lake, a gated community a few miles from here. Those kids have deer in their yards every day, so they have at least some exposure to wildlife.
When they come out of the coccoon, they can't help but see the farmland if they go any further than their school.
