Did you ever drive a V12 car in your life?

Jeremy Clarkson once quoted someone who said something like every man has to drive a V12 car at least once in his life.

EDIT: I found the original quote "I firmly believe that anyone, who is worth anything at all, should own a 12 cylinder car before they die. Because there is nothing else like it"

The man who said is: David E. Davis

You can find him saying this quote in 5:11 in this clip of 60 minutes about the Countach

I've ridden in an older Jag V12 but never driven one.

Still love those old XJS's.

Biggest I've ever done is the BMW 550 at one of those breast cancer events :p

Heh - I first read that as "Chevette" and nearly crapped myself.

All it'd take is an LS7 swap and some tubs...

...and some major chassis reinforcement. But then I'd bet that you could drive through a street racing bust and have the cops just tell you to move along. :)

I've sat shotgun in a Viper SRT-10 for a strip run and some fun in a parking lot, but never have I driven it.

I'd die hahah.

cylinders = balance/smoothness more than anything. Power comes from the displacement.

I voted no but thinking back I have driven a mid 80s Jag with a V-12 engine. There is nothing special about that car though...unless you're a Jaguar mechanic.

You'd think that the SRT-10 might have been a clue :)

An 8.0 or 8.3L V10 is really something else though :p

No for me.

If we're talking V-12s, then the brands we're talking about are pretty much exclusively European for the newer cars. BMW, Mercedes, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Jaguar, Aston Martin, etc.

Now some of the older American cars did come with V-12's just because the car companies were going for power and designers were thinking more cylinders = more power. Companies like Cadillac, Packard and Hudson I think all had V-12's. They were all massive cars though, so the horsepower gains for the increased number of cylinders didn't net much as far as performance. These were most likely built in the 20's and 30's though. I can't think of any American cars built in the 50's-60's with V-12's. By that time they had realized displacement gave better bang for the buck when it came to developing more HP.

Yes, I've driven a Jaguar with a V12. It was very smooth but had a surprising lack of power.

I drove a 2003 Mercedes S600 twice. 500hp, 590ft/lbs of turbo V12 power made it so you could get the tires to blip in 3rd gear.
