Did you end up doing what you thought you wanted to do back in high school?

I'm about to enter college and I'm one of the few people lucky enough to have a profession that I like to do, and is attainable, and has decent pay. A lot of people want to become teachers, sports stars, etc. etc. I just want to be a businessman. I'm familiar with a lot of the fields involved in business, I have some experience already (senior in high school), and I really think I've done what everyone tells you to do: Find something you like to do, and get paid for it.

My question is, how many of you ended up doing what you thought you were going to do? If you thought you were going to be in the NBA or a movie star or whatever, what are you now? If your "career" changed somewhere along in college or whatever, why did that happen?

edit: Title sounded sort of mean, didn't mean for it to sound like that

after doing the job I wanted to do for a little over a year, I found that what I really wanted to do basicly sucked ass. It wasn't what I expected.

specifically? I thought for the longest time I wanted to get into the tech field. Then I found out I'm really a newbie compared to some people my age already, and with the declining tech field, things like programming and HTML started to bore me also.

#1. I changed my post because there were 2 ways of interpreting it.

#2. Auto Tech/Mechanic. I loved small engines as a kid and would go garbage picking them from everywhere. I probbaly still have 20 in my shed. I even turned an old 70's ariens rider into a go cart when I was 12 or 13.
I then went on to take all the classes in my high school, placed 3rd in the state in the ford AAA automotice student challenge, and worked at a garage for a little over a year. I wanted to be doing engine work and such. Not the crap they had me doing. It was because Iw as lowest on the totem pole, but still.

Basicly my deam job turned into my not dream job ya know what I mean? I was always into computers, so I just decided to go that way. That is what I am doing now.

Well, I graduated last summer with a CS degree, thought I would be doing some sort of programming type job. Couldn't find a programming job but found a sys. admin job. Been doing it since, and I don't like it much. What's sad is that I've come to the realization I probably wouldn't like a programming position any better. So I basically have a degree in a field which I don't have much, if any, passion for. 🙁

I'm sorry, if I had kept my "dreams" in the tech industry that's probably what would have happened to me as well, being stuck with something that you don't enjoy. If you could go back and do it all over again, where would you be today?

Well, looking back at my post, it probably sounds a lot worse than it really is. I don't really know if I would hate programming as a career, seeing as how i've never done it. I still like programming things for fun, but my level of enthusiasm has really fell off. Maybe it's because my current job has really jaded me to computers. I can say for sure Sys. admin is not my type of job. I mean sure, for the most part it's easy, but I feel like I am not doing anything with my life. I could have done most of the things I do at my current job when I had graduated high school. Most of the new stuff I had to learn wasn't taught to me in school. So what was that 4 years of college for?

I studied classical music back in college, though I was pretty sure I didn't want that as a career, but it was cool while it lasted. I had a scholarship.

Then I was a rock musician. All riiiight! Burnt out on that, went to music production, tech work etc. That's how I ended up in computers.

From junior high on, I knew I'd be in construction, carpentry etc., and I was... for a few years. Decided punching a clock would be less stressful, and it was... for 25 years. Now it's time to switch gears... not sure to what, though.

So, WTF does a "businessman" do for a living? What is a day in the life of a "businessman" like?

Growing up I always took things apart (my father allowed me to live...) and usually got them back together. I went to college for three years, joined the Major of the Month club (Bus Adm, Comp Sci, EET) and dropped out. Took a job as a maintenance mechanic at a textile plant. Worked there for just shy of 10 years. The place closed down, I took a maintenance job at a plastics plant, took over the maintenance department (manager) and I am also the systems administrator. I enjoy what I do, most of the time.

The day in the life of a buisnessman. They are suit wearing corporate asskissers.

Go to work
Kiss Ass
Eat Lunch
Kiss More Ass
Be cruel to underlings
Go home

That is unless you own your own buisness.

Yep, started learning programming seriously at 14 and even did some game coding for (low) pay before college. College major was CS (BSCS UM-St Louis '91), went to grad school at UW in Seattle to decide if I wanted a PhD and to teach. Decided not to and have been working full time as a Windows C++/MFC developer since then.

After 9 years of full-time employmnet I still enjoy designing and writing software. If I were just coding (without the designing and a little management) it might get boring. And it probably would be boring if I were doing something too easy like COBOL coding for a bank instead of application software.

No. I was a total jock all growing up. Wanted to race motorcross but to many broken bones and I got way to big to be competitive. I became a scientist/engineer instead and never took a chemistry or calculus class in HS. Just played sports and occationally brought my books home. But I mostly looked forward to friday night parties. Life is weird.

Same here. If I had to do it again I'd go to medical school.

When I was young (as in 4yrs old) I wanted to be a fighter pilot or an astronaut.

Then as I got older I realized things like that make me nasuous (sp?). In high school I knew I wanted to do something with cars & computers.

I'm in 1st year Uni and I still have the same dream. I wanna get into VLSI and start doing some chip design for either Delphi or Bosch or any other car company. My goal is to work on/develop a integrated car system that links all the different components together or work on a chassis/suspension control system (as in active control). We'll see how that goes.

im in hs trying to find out what i wanna go to u for... thing is, im smart. im good at maths and sciences. if i dont go for somethign in those fields, i feel like im wasting it ya know! and i wanna go into tech.. cause i have an interest for computer stuff. but... i dont know if my interest would be the same if i were DESIGNING that crap! i dont know if i will be able to stand this for the rest of my life... :| ive been thinking about getting an engineering or science degree of some sort [not sure yet] and then getting an mba. i think i enjoy the asskicking part of it 😀 however i dont really want a biz undergrad cause its kinda useless....

When I was in high school I wanted to be a writer. My goal after high school was to get a marketable education so I could sustain myself w/a day job while I wrote on nights/weekends until I could writing alone provided enough of an income for me. In college I fell into TV production and discovered I enjoyed "writting" w/images and sounds more than I did w/pen and paper. So today I'm a shooter/editor (I enjoy editng more, but shooting always ends up paying the bills).

So to answer yer question. Yes, I'm doing what I wanted to do back in high school (hell back in grade school) I'm just using a different medium.

We'll see how it goes.

I've been into comps for a long time, I'm in first year comp eng right now. But I'm worried that there might not be any comp eng jobs when I graduate, so I might switch to electrical or some other traditional eng. discipline....
