Did you at first find LCD image quality very bad?

For the longest time I was using a 14" (yes you read that right) CRT that was made in 1996. I used it for years with games, DVD playback, every day use, etc. I kept reading that LCDs would blow that display away, so a couple months ago I ordered a 19" LCD.

For the first two days I found the image quality to be extremely poor in comparison. So much so that I was getting ready to ship it back. Then all of a sudden by the 3rd day it seemed very good. Not sure what caused the sudden change in my opinion. But as you can imagine it was a drastic change from what I was using before.

Today just to compare I pulled it out of the garage and used it for about 30 mins. MY GOD how I could have used that thing for that many years astounds me. I have no idea why I found the LCD quality so bad at first, but it really is pretty interesting when I give it some thought.

Did anyone else have the same experience when they switched from CRT to LCD? Is it a common experience?

When I got my Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW I was frustrated by the horrible blown out colors. It turned out the bright setting was up too high. Also, a good LCD makes DVD (which are standard definition) show their impending obsolescence.

LCDs being fed digitally at native resolution put all but the best CRTs to shame in terms of sharpness and detail. Color reproduction and usage at multiple resolutions are in favor of very good CRTs.

Some people are bothered by the higher brightness, (sometimes) less accurate color rendering (especially on 6-bit panels), and the 'screen door effect'. But I adjusted very quickly, possibly because I'd used laptops quite a bit before getting a desktop LCD.

They just bug me how things "smear" when moving high-contrast boundaries slowly. Also, I swear my laptop's backlight is getting dimmer and dimmer; I sure wish it were brighter but I don't know if I want to replace it - I know it's old. Then again, our last CRT ended up getting really dim as well, so, I guess it's a draw there.

I went from a 21 inch NEC Diamondtron flat-screen CRT to my current BenQ 24 inch LCD so I wasn't blown away by the IQ of an LCD, but overall it is better for everything I've tried so far, including games which was my biggest concern. The brightness was the only thing I had to adjust to, but after just a few days thst problem has taken care of itself & I'll never go back.

I have yet to find an LCD that makes me wanna give up my 24" Sony GDM-FW900 CRT ,Once this monitor dies I wont have much choice but to go LCD .. but for now im perfectly happy, 1920x1200 desktop res looks very sharp and I have no motion blur / response time / input lag worries plus the ability to run multiple resolutions without sacrificing image quality.

I was going to upgrade to an LCD from my 19" Samsung 997DF, but most of the LCDs I see my friends (the ones prompting me to upgrade) raving over are cheap TN panels. Wound up getting a 22" IBM Trinitron tube CRT instead for a fraction of the price I could have gotten a good 20" LCD for. Night and day difference over the Samsung, and night and day difference over all the LCDs I see at my university's LAN.

I will have to go LCD another time.
Oh, and I definitely don't lug this thing around to LANs. I have spare monitor for that ;)

And you probably pay $35 a month for electricity just for CRT?

Overstatement. Three computers & five CRTs in my apartment, and our electric bill is usually around $75/mo for most of the year in Florida.

I returned two Dells a little over a year ago because they were too bright. The text was too small and they exhibited silk screen effect. Not to mention the blacks were gray. Image sucked.....there was no away around it and getting used to it wasn't going to change things.

Went with a Samsung 215tw a few months ago....LCD tech really has improved! But, I don't care if the response is 8 ms, it still can't handle FEAR like my NEC CRT. And WS is simply so overhyped.

Each tech have something to offer. A good CRT looks great (like the NEC I'm typing on now) and for gaming a LCD simply can't keep up. And those that come close I would rather not look at for too long.

Actually I was the same way when I got my first LCD. At first I thought it looked worse compared to a CRT, but when I tried to go back, the CRT just looked horrible and I couldn't believe I thought it was any good to begin with. I think maybe the increased brightness and sharpness of an LCD allow details to come through that you weren't able to see before, kind of like viewing a standard TV broadcast on an HDTV. But when you try to go back you realize what you were missing.

I felt similar when I first moved to an LCD.
I was bothered by the low contrast and the screendoor effect.
But overall, I still liked it as it didn't lose it's clarity with the brightness turned up.
I recently got a 21" Sony G520 to compliment my LCD again, and when I first got it, it looked horrible.
I slowly adjusted back to the CRT, and now I use my CRT as my main screen, and LCD as my secondary screen. In fact, after seeing games on both screens, I can't stand the lack of contrast and deep blacks on my 2001fp.

Since when do high-end gamers worry about the electric bill? ;)

The hardest part about going to an LCD from a CRT for me was viewing angles.

When I first got my LCD I felt like I couldn't get a good spot where the entire screen showed up at one level of brightness/clarity, but after a couple days I didn't notice it at all. If I move to one side now I have to actually try to notice it.

I'm in love with widescreen LCD,never going back to CRT,mind you I did buy a ColorVision Spyder to calibrate my colours ,plus I'm using DVI as well so have nothing to complain about :),infact when I looked at my 21 inch 2 year old CRT,it looked dark and out of focus compared to my LCD, so I boxed it away.

It depends.
I used to get a sh!ty CRT myself so it was like going from Flinstones days to Star War days :D
Viva LCD
One exception, however...the blackness on most LCD s^cks really bad. So CRT had it advantage(s).

And WS is simply so overhyped.

I totally disagree. Then again, it's really a matter of opinion...

As far as LCD's go, once I adjusted to the brightness a bit I've never looked back. I actually just got rid of our last CRT PC monitor last week. Good timing too, as I might be moving soon. : )

My only experience with LCDs is by looking at demos in the store, but I haven't seen one yet that I thought was that great...unless it was a HD plasma screen instead. I have a very cheap 17" KDS CRT, which I am happy with, but I may get an LCD for a second monitor, since desktop space is at a premium for me. I have a hunch that the difference in people's perspectives about LCD is largely based on the brand and model that they have.

Actually went from a LCD to CRT, prefer the CRT. LCD wasnt all that great of one, but neither is the CRT.

No question about it, I looked at a lot of LCD's before deciding on the BenQ I have now and many of them didn't look good at all... short of a $1500 Eizo a friend of mine uses, this screen is the best LCD I've seen.
