Did video really kill the radio star?

VH1 has daily top 20 program that plays the whole length of the videos w/o the dumbass VJ talking all over the video.

Maybe Survivor isn't the "best" example for the reality tv show craze (see "Who wants to be a Millionaire" and "American Idol"), and I know it wasn't the first - as stated, Cops is the first.

Regardless, it did break television records, and gave the studios a template to work with. Now it's all you see on TV because it is what sells.

MTV did the same thing with music - it found a working model to sell records and ran with it. Now, as an artist, if you want to be a megastar, you need to be on MTV or a similar counterpart - basically you need television exposure.

And if that performer does not have a certain "look" to them, they will not be on, regardless of their talent. Nowadays, record companies won't even sign you if you don't have sexual marketability.
 
Commercials and crappy top 40s songs played 30 times in one day across a monopoly of radio stations killed the radio star.
 
I wouldn't say radio is bigger than ever. I mean, who was the last nationally famous DJ? howard stern from the 80's?

there's only one radio station in the NYC area (the biggest market in the country) where the DJ's can actually pick their own songs to play.

Ah. I thought the relationship was how MTV exploited music... I was thinking to myself "How did 'Survivor' exploit a media that was around for 50+ years"
 
Seeing that Buggles Clip made me remember how incredible paranoid the 80s made me....it's all just too freaky...

I recovered in the 90s with "iLike big butts" though..😀
 
I don't think they are talking about music, but rather movies/shows. Afternoon talk shows and other shows are not nearly as popular as they were before video (with the exception of howard stern, who has been out of the media for a while now).
 
What videos? The only place I have really managed to find any for a long time is the internet. As for radio, maybe elsewhere it is good, but where I'm at it sucks, unless you like country, and I dont.

That's not true for the radio star. Radio talkshow hosts and DJs are not radio stars, they're assholes on mics. Radio stars are voice actors (Edit: this is what I always thought when I heard the song, but I know that the song is talking about musical talent).

In the 40s everyone gathered around the radio much like we gather around a TV today. The radio stars back then were more popular than radio stars of today (I think NPR has some radio stars)

And then the Internet made everyone stupid.

Edit: Also, for musical talent, someone else pointed out that ugly people can not make music and this is true 99% of the time because of video. There are rare exceptions, but I can't think of any right now.
