Heck, I dont remember how I drive from work and back. Its become so repetive.

Its not like we bust out a map everytime we go somewhere, so you realize after a while "oh crap. how did I know to turn right here!?"

Memory is a funny thing. You normally remember life events easily, but you can't remember what you ate two weeks ago. My guess, the higher the impact on you the more likely you will remember it. It's like everything else, over time you become decensitized to the things that happen over and over and over again.

Usually happens when I'm half asleep driving. I've done it numerous times and when I get home I don't recall what I drove by to get there. And this is w/o any alcohol.

Sounds like a hardware problem. That's what you get for running CAS3 brain cells @ CAS2. ;)

Not really, but i've realized that a lot of the time i'm looking at the scenery and I have no idea how I manage to stay on the road

Oh! :Q Were you sleep driving? :Q Please next time pull to the corner and take a big nap. Raising your radio volume doesn't solve the sleeping problem. You don't want to put your life and other people's lives in danger.

I experienced this feeling often while commuting to UCLA. Driving the same route day after day made it so automatic that I stopped noticing my surroundings.

I've done that before. When I do it's usually if I'm driving somewhere I've been to many times. :)

Happens to me all the time. Thats why I try to find as many different routes to a place as possible, that way I never have to go the same way on two consecutive days. That feeling creeps me out.

Have you ever driven somewhere and when you got there forgotten why you wanted to be there?

Yeah that happens to me sometimes, I think its just a zone out type thing. Someone can be talking to me and I sometimes have no recollection of ANYTHING the person said, it's just......, gone. That happend often in highschol . I have to be pretty bored or tierd for that to happen but it DOSE happen.

Lots of the time I will be daydreaming while driving. Not that I am tired, its just I am thinking about other stuff and not about driving. It seems everyone drives fine that way. I remember I used to play road rash for my game gear all of the time, and I would stop daydreaming/realize I hadn't really been paying attention, and see how I was doing better then I normally do. So see, daydreaming makes you drive better =D. It's the actual dreaming thats bad... And loud music does help me if I am tired. I just pop in my being-awake music - AKA PowerMan5000 - and I am on my way.

I've had that happen, it's worst when I'm tired.

Occasionally if something serious is on my mind it will produce the same results, but usually it's because I'm WAY too tired to be driving.

Were you tired?

driving is my thinking time, so even though it sounds freaky, I might only remember one trip out of say 12 a week... it's not that I'm a bad driver, it's that I've done the routine so many times it's second nature and thus have no reason to remember the trip I guess.

I doubt it happened because you were tired but I suppose it's possible. More commonly I think, when you're doing things that involve processing large amounts of information like driving and aren't thinking about what you're doing in particular, you tend to remember less of what was going on. Kinda like the autopilot thing people mentioned before. There have been times when I've been driving in bad weather and focusing intently just on that, and then didn't remember parts of the trip after getting home.

The term is "highway hypnosis" (do a google search), and it's a legitimate problem.
