I have an ASUS P2B98 440BX MAINBOARD, PC-100, 128MB SDRAM, 7NS, 1-DIMM.
I have been trying to troubleshoot a startup problem for a week now.
I did as much troubleshooting as I could and the only things I have noticed were:
1 I started the computer in "Safe Mode" opened the control panel and clicked on "system". Clicked on the "Device Manager" tab and properties. Every IRQ has the following comment next to it. "In use by unknown device"
2. Still in "Safe Mode" I left clicked on the start button, programs, accessories, system tools, system information. I selected the information for "DMA" and it said in all seven DMA's were "FREE".
3. I then clicked on IRQ information and in all fifteen IRQ's were listed as "FREE".
I called my computer manufacturer and he suggested:
1. To remove all my PCI cards except for the video card and my SCSI controller card.
2. Format my "C" Drive and put a fresh copy of Windows 98 back on it.
I did all that the last installation step that W-98 does is to check for plug and play devices and install drivers for them. While it's checking for devices the following statment is visible on the monitor. "if the installations appears to take to long reboot the computer".
I did this and now the computer boots up thru two "DOS" screens then to a brief "W-98" screen and then the blue screen of death. Nothing but blue screen and the mouse pointer. No error messages.
Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this problem? Is the mother board defective?
Thank you for any assistance
