did this laptop fry?

just recently (2 days ago) purchased this used from a member. all was fine upon initial check. yesterday, i noticed the area around where the ac plugs in getting hot. i unplugged it and let it cool off. then i tried it again in the evening. about an hour or two later, i smell something burning and then i see smoke coming out of the left side vents. before i could shut down, the thing shut itself down. now it won't boot up at all!

any ideas where to start? i've contacted the seller just to see if he's had any previous experience w/ this.

well, looks like i'll be parting her out. called 3 or so repair shops and they all immediately sd that the power inverter (or converter???) probably went bad and it just wouldn't be cost effecient to repair. i guess the smoke and burning smell are common signs of this (???).

i have no idea, but smoke and electronics don't usually mix well
