That movie was alright but there were too many flaws with that movie.

Wrong squadrons for F-14 and carrier shots were all wrong.

Anybody who made deployments onboard carriers can easily see the flaws.

I realize it's a movie and they need to make it interesting and all but they didn't need
to make such obvious errors.

the same can be said for any movie that has any profession in it. you think cops can do what they do on TV and in the movies in real life?

But I can see where your coming from...ruins the movie when you know too much.:(

They made it already, only it was called Days of Thunder and featured NASCAR racing instead of jets. And Tom Cruise wonders why the Acadamy doesn't take him seriously. ;)

Uh... until you listen to the technical data listed in the movie or thought rationally about if the flight crew would actually flood the flight deck like that after a few migs taken out or if the carrier would actually be at sea on it's own without any support or ... well, I'll stop. It's got some good scenes. :)

Uh... until you listen to the technical data listed in the movie
or even some of the goofs..

Tom Cruise is an inch too short to be a Navy pilot (minimum height 5'8", based on minimum sitting height 32" and minimum leg length 36").

The aircraft used are not "MiG-28"s but disguised F-5 Tiger IIs. There is no Mig 28. Soviet fighter planes were designated by odd numbers. Even numbers were reserved for ground attack craft.

It is impossible to fly two aircraft inverted so closely together.

The main rear cockpit display in an F14 is a Tactical Information Display, not a PPI scope as indicated.

When Maverick is launched to help Iceman, he is more than 110 miles from him. Claiming he'll be there in 30 seconds, he would have to travel at 13,200mph (Mach 18). His F-14's top speed would be Mach 2.

The signal that Maverick is given before he takes off for the final fight scene is not the launch signal, but rather the "remove power" signal. This signal is given early in F-14 launch procedures, not right before launch.

When Hollywood's plane is hit in the final fight, he ejects. However, the person that ejected is clearly a skydiver, as there is no chair, and "Hollywood" throws open his parachute. His parachute would automatically open.

When Maverick is flying toward Iceman, he says he is flying at supersonic. However, later his plane is shown with the wings forward. At high speed, F-14 should have the wing toward the tail and usually additional small wings come out of the side of the mid-section.

U.S. Pilots never report an enemy plane as a MiG. They are required to say the NATO call sign for the appropriate aircraft, such as "Fishbed" for a MiG-21 or "Fulcrum" for a MiG-29

When Maverick returns to the carrier and misses the cable on his first approach, he pulls both the stick and throttles aft. The stick is correct, but the aft throttles would bring the engines to idle, not full power.

Who cares? They wanted Tom Cruise to play in the movie, 1" doesn't matter.

Gee, you mean they couldn't jsut rent some migs from Russia in the 80s?

It is impossible to fly two aircraft inverted so closely together.
Yeah, but it was there for dramatic effect. It was a cool scene anyway.

Ok that should have been done correctly.

When Maverick is launched to help Iceman, he is more than 110 miles from him. Claiming he'll be there in 30 seconds, he would have to travel at 13,200mph (Mach 18). His F-14's top speed would be Mach 2.
Ever hear of the term "exageration"?

The signal that Maverick is given before he takes off for the final fight scene is not the launch signal, but rather the "remove power" signal. This signal is given early in F-14 launch procedures, not right before launch.
That one should have been correct, too.

When Hollywood's plane is hit in the final fight, he ejects. However, the person that ejected is clearly a skydiver, as there is no chair, and "Hollywood" throws open his parachute. His parachute would automatically open.

Gee, you mean that the Navy doesn't really let them blow up F-14s in movies?

When Maverick is flying toward Iceman, he says he is flying at supersonic. However, later his plane is shown with the wings forward. At high speed, F-14 should have the wing toward the tail and usually additional small wings come out of the side of the mid-section.
Maybe he slowed down between the two scenes?

U.S. Pilots never report an enemy plane as a MiG. They are required to say the NATO call sign for the appropriate aircraft, such as "Fishbed" for a MiG-21 or "Fulcrum" for a MiG-29
What do you suppose he should have said then, since they were using a fictional aircraft as an enemy?

When Maverick returns to the carrier and misses the cable on his first approach, he pulls both the stick and throttles aft. The stick is correct, but the aft throttles would bring the engines to idle, not full power.
Yeah, he should have done that right.

I ran into Anthony Edwards (Goose) a few years ago at the Chicago Grand Prix. I was going to play with him and run some Top Gun quotes by him, but then decided not to. I was also going to ask him if Meg Ryan was a good lay, but I thought that it wouldn't be a good idea to ask that either.

Just to clarify something. The footage of the carrier being alone is true. The carrier in Top Gun was not actually operating on it's own. AS in real life, the battle group was operating beyond visual range of each other, usually anywhere from 25 to 100 miles apart. This creates a huge defensive perimeter for the carrier and allows the AEGIS cruisers and destroyers to create an Umbrella of SM-2 SAM coverage.

If you guys want another goof, that wasn't mentioned, how about the fact that the carrier was directing flight operations with it's radar ACTIVE. HMmm... If it were me, I would not give away the position of my 6 billion dollar carrier. carriers NEVER have their detection systems active! They are in a state of EMCON (Emissions Control) 24/7. In-Flight intercepts and missions are coordinated by the E-2C HAwkeye early-warning aircraft. The Hawkeye also is responsible for radar coverage for the battle group along with ONE SPY-1B radar located on an AEGIS cruiser.

Top Gun = Cool when I first saw it. Crap these days

Iron Eagle? The movie where that kid singlehandedly destroys the entire airforce of a country with a single F-16? Crap. Complete, 100% pure crap.
