WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Rep. Gary Condit (news - bio - voting record), a California Democrat questioned about the disappearance last spring of intern Chandra Levy, disclosed on Thursday that his office has been served with a grand jury subpoena.
In a letter to House of Representative Speaker Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican, Condit wrote that the ''subpoena for documents'' was issued by the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.
District of Columbia police have headed the investigation into the disappearance last April of the 24-year-old Levy.
The married congressman initially denied an intimate relationship with Levy, but reportedly admitted to police in mid-July that he had an affair with her.
Police have said Condit, 53, who intends to seek a seventh two-year term in Congress next year, is not a target of their missing person investigation.
Condit's attorney, Abbe D. Lowell, said in statement on Thursday his client would provide law enforcement all requested information. But he disagreed with the need for a subpoena.
Condit has ``cooperated fully'' in the past, Lowell said, including undergoing four interviews, providing documents and permitting his apartment to be searched. Though the congressman offered further assistance, the government made no further requests, the attorney said, yet it subpoenaed additional information.
``Issuing a subpoena was not necessary,'' Lowell said. ''However, whatever the reasons for its issuance, Congressman Condit and his office will, as they have in the past, provide the information law enforcement seeks.''
Last summer, before the Sept. 11 attacks took the national spotlight, Condit was center stage fighting for his political life.
His hometown's major newspaper, the Modesto Bee, called on him to resign and the Levy case was featured nearly daily on television talk shows.
The congressman's letter to Hastert notifying the speaker of the subpoena was dated Nov. 14, and released on Thursday.
