did these ads always have sound effects?

i just began to notice today that some of the ads have sound effects. i'm not b!tching... but it just caught me off guard. i'm just reading, reading, reading... then all of a sudden i hear some faint noises (my speaker volume was set low). i was pretty sure my winamp was not running, and i did not have any other windows open. then i thought... did i get hacked? i ponder some more and realized it might be an ad from AT. now i verified it becuz i just saw an ad with a racecar and heard some car engine rev'ing sounds. anyway... just wondering... is this new, or has it always been like that?
