Did the WPCREDIT tweak, no sound now

Can anyone advise me on this?

I did the KT266 WPCREDIT tweak, changing register 95h to 1E. Sure enough, my CPU temp dropped from around 50C to 35C (case temp 25C) over the course of a few minutes. But my sound stopped working entirely. There's no exclamation point in Device Manager and no indication that sound isn't working, except... well, there's no sound. (I checked speaker volume and did the obvious things...)

I did a system restore, got sound back, repeated the process, lost sound again, so I know it's not a coincidence.

I'd rather have sound than a cooler CPU (I can live with 50C, I guess) but both would be better yet. I've already loaded the system with fans and taped up some holes, and put in rounded IDE cables but I'm still running close to 50C much of the time without the WPCREDIT tweak.

System:
1.4ghz Athlon (sorry, don't know what HSF the reseller put on it when I bought the mb combo... 😱)
AK31rev2 mobo (KT266)
Maxtor HDD (30g 7200rpm, 40g 5400 rpm, 80g 7200 rpm)
TDK 10/12/32 CDRW
Aureal Vortex sound card
GeForce 2 MX 400 video
D-Link 10/100 NIC
512MB DDR PC2100 (half Kingston, half Crucial)
80mm intake fan, 80mm exhaust fan, HD bay cooler & slot cooler

Meanwhile, my SO's new K7S5A and 1Ghz Duron are running at 21C/25C according to Sandra... between this and the "New Hardware Found" problem with Via's IDE bus master thing (every time I boot it recognizes "new" hardware that's already installed, seems to work fine, but says there's no driver installed and the driver is dated 10/26/2000---wth!??) I'm getting fed up.

I had almost the exact same problem. I just did that tweak today and it works great for lowering my temps. But I am having sound problems now also. After the tweak, my onboard sound was very disrupted and squeeky. But when I ran prime95 and got my cpu temp and case temp to where it was before I did the tweak, my sound was back to normal (almost, I still heard some of the squeeking, but once or twice).

I installed a PCI sound card and I haven't had any problems with sound since. I guess that tweak didn't like my onboard sound hehe. Or I could be wrong and I'm missing something here, as you are? Anyone know?

I don't know what the fix is but see here. This is a fix for lost sound on Aureal soundcards on boards with VIA chipsets that also uses WPCREDIT. Maybe looking at that will help understand why the temperature fix you did kills the soundcard.

Also check out the vortex of sound forum.

Thanks for the replies, you guys. jar5tyle, that's interesting that getting a PCI sound card fixed your problem--I already have a PCI sound card. I saw something about not putting it in slots 5 or 6, if memory serves, and I think I have it in slot 5, so maybe I should move it to a different slot.

extro: thanks for the links... I'm already in over my head with WPCREDIT; I was able to follow the step-by-step instructions for that one tweak, but otherwise I can't make much sense of what I see on the screen there.

At this point, the main options I'm considering are (1) live with the somewhat high temps, or (2) ditch this motherboard and get something with the SiS735 chipset, like the K7S5A.
