Did the SATA cable die...?

Hello!

I recieved my newegg refurb 74gb Raptor a couple of days ago and finally put it in today. Everything ran great and I installed Windows without a hitch. However, I was installing UT2k4 when the comp froze and then the monitor went black shortly. I then turned off the computer and tried to restart it. The monitor wasn't recieving a video signal and I got one long beep followed by two short beeps from the motherboard. Thinking that maybe the HD might of died on me I then unplugged the SATA cable from the mobo and tried to turn on the comp again. I got the same set of beeps and still no display, (can a computer boot up without a HD connected to it?). I then decided to try a brand new SATA cable and the thing worked great again. My guess is a bad SATA cable but this (with it being a refurb and all) has got me somewhat worried. What do you guys think? Was it a bad SATA cable or is my HD just maybe dying? Also if it was a bad cable, could it dying on me while it was on could have caused any harm to the HD or mobo?

Thanks alot!
