I was building a computer for my friend yesterday, and i put it all together, and it started up just fine. I went to go and get my Windows XP cd, and when i looked back i saw the screen go blank, and my monitor switched to no signal light.

I tried restarting, checking for burned smell, I pulled the processor but it was cold, swapping video cards, Reseatting the RAM, I unplugged the hard drive and the 2 cd drives. Nothing even got me a post. and when i plugged back in my hard drive, it didn't spin up. But my CPU fan starts up, and my keyboard lights up when i hit power, so it doesen't seem like the motherboard.

So i was wondering if it seems like the Processor or not

Help would be great!

Get your mainboard manual out and find the procedure for resetting your CMOS. Once the CMOS has been cleared, your system will probably come back to life.

Cheers!

P4 are close to nuke proof, check elsewhere and consider that the last possible explaination IMO.

I had a prob like this before. Make sure you have brass screws so you don't short out the motherboard. (it should still be fine just make sure they aren't conducting)

The part where the HDD didn't spin up sounded odd.
When the screen had gone blank, was the PC still on? or was it shut down?
Would you mind telling me the spec of the machine? It could be compatibility between boards.

Try removing EVERYTHING except video card, cpu and ram. No post still? Try the chip in another mainboard.

Cheers!

Here's the Specs:

Abit SA7 Motherboard w/ SIS645DX Chipset
P4 2.0Ghz 512kb Cache 400Mhz
Biostar GeForce MX400 64mb 4x AGP
256MB PC 2700 DDR RAM
WD 80GB 7200RPM Hard Drive

I alreayd tried removing everything except the CPU, Ram, and Video Card. And i Tried removing the motherboard from the case and setting it on a foam pad, to make sure it wasn't conducting through to the case. And when the screen blanked out was while the computer was on.

I also tried swapping the Ram out, and Putting in a PCI video card.

> Swapping RAM
Are you using 2 sticks? if so, try using just one.
and check power connections.

Why do ppl list specs and never seem to say what thier Power Supply is???

Could be a power issue...What do you have and can you test that quickly on another board or vice versa???

I'm only using one stick of Ram. I swapped by taking out one stick, and putting in one of my others. And i have a Raidmax RD-350 Watt Power Supply, and i'll got check it out on another mother board right now.

the power supply may be an easy thing to overlook. just a few days ago i had a brand new enlight ps go out on me.
windows installed and everyting seemed fine until i ran a program and it locked up on me.
i double checked everything and it seemed to be in place, but when i press the power button the cpu fan spun for a
second and and system failed to boot.

i swapped ps and it came on light a lightbulb.

I tried hooking up my 500 Watt P/S up to it, and i get exactly the same results as i did before. Does this look like a bad motherboard?
