Did the movie Pearl Harbor bug anyone else?

The movie itself was ok, but the fact that Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck were portrayed as war heroes was simply ridiculous. Baldwin is the guy whose wife said they would leave the country if Bush was elected president (link), and Affleck campained all over the country for Gore. How many survivors of Pearl Harbor are left-wing liberals, because my-step grandfather (who manned an AA gun in the attack) sure isn't.

Jimmy Doolittle was practically the opposite of Baldwin in every respect. He worked for Shell Oil before and after the war and served on many military advisory boards: he was pro-military and anti-environment. Baldwin and Affleck both may have political aspirations, but they should never be mistaken as war heros.

The movie should have been subtitled "Disney's Wonderful World War II." :p

There is your reason for them playing war heroes, right there.

Who cares? That's the actor, not the character. Just watch the movie, and not think about what goes on in the actor's personal life.

Ya, I know, they're just actors. But it's like watching madonna try to play the Virgin Mary in a movie: it's just doesn't seem right.

I find it a little jarring to see a creep like Alec Baldwin playing anything other than a wife-beating disloyal loudmouth.

I dont feel like the actors personal lives have much to do with the credibility of the movie. If they did, then I would boycott any movie with Tom Cruise or John Travolta etc. I liked it about average, but it definately wasnt a war movie so much as a typical hollywood drama, with some nifty special effects.

I saw tora tora tora available on dvd the other day. If they could mix in Pear Harbors fight sequences and the tora tora tora story and actors, it would be a masterpiece.

Haha, we watched Tora Tora Tora in history at the end of school last semester. That was prolly the best of the oldies movies we've watch so far. It actually had colors and not black and white :)

I think you are right Baldwin was a bad Doolittle. Besides they should have spent more time trying to find a better FDR. THAT GUY WAS HORRIBLE! However, I thought the movie was not all that bad.

To be honest, I never even considered that angle. Those people are actors, meaning they portray a character on the big screen. So long as they can act, it doesn't matter one bit who they are in real life compared to the characters they portray.

It was the poor acting, cheezy and cliche-filled script, and done-to-death Hollywood love story BS that bugged me. The movie was about as good (hardly at all) as the last time I saw it, when it was called Titanic.

Sad thing is that a lot of people will think this is true history. Gotta love public education these days....it's all about self esteem instead of teaching.

this cheap commerical merchandise should've 'bugged' more people. who cares that
baldwin was miscast due to his bizarre and incompatible political beliefs vis-a-vis
doolitle. the fact the producers and director so cannibalized a solemn moment for
vulgar profiteering should have galled everyone.

if you're lonely, have a few million to burn, and want a small taste of fame then i would recommend you copy their script formula, hire a cg f/x crew, cast a few starving models,
and make yourself a sizeable return on your relatively modest investment. no real thought
is involved here. just a hardworking guy or gal, some gumption, and a fat bank account.
a profitable return is almost guaranteed in today's watered-down americanized culture.
there are dozens of marketing companies who would love to look at your finished work.

I got news for you:

Movies based on historical events are usually 100% fake and 60% made up.

I thought that 'Titanic' would be sufficient to show this, but I guess I was wrong. For accuracy and not entertainment, go watch a documentary about Pearl Harbor.
