Oh, and forgot to add, as many exotic animals as the Chinese have eaten, we never killed no Injuns, buffalo, dodos, or whales. We haven't gotten entire nations hooked on drugs or made any countries glow in the dark. If you're gonna hate on the Chinese, pick something better than what we eat.

I'm chinese and I've eaten exotic animals. Green Peace me you hippie, it won't save your precious endangered species. I've had duck, swan, pheasant, pigeon, shark, alligator, live abalone (well live until he couldn't crawl any further out of the frying pan), frog, chicken blood, cow everything, pig everything, and I'm proud of it.

I've eaten all those too. But I'm talking about the Cantonese penchant to actively search for exotic things to eat. From what I understand, the eating of Civit Cats is relatively new to China -- it's not something that has been eaten for centuries. It's considered an exotic novelty. China started importing them in great numbers starting in the fall -- at about the time SARS first appeared.

just to clarify i'm chinese myself and no i don't hate my own race

i just think it's an unhealthy and superstitious tradition to find the weirdest animal you can find and eat it because you think it's good for your health or it give syou bragging rights.

The Japanese do the same thing. How long do you think it took to get blowfish right?

You sure about that? I'm not sure if it was Civet, but there was a big scandal in San Francisco almost 10 years ago cuz some guy imported some animal (can't remember the name but it looked a lot like a Civet) and had some restaurant cook it for him but the government found out and busted everyone involved. Thats where I first read that it was a common animal to eat in parts of China.

I might have gotten the animal mixed up but from what I know Civet (at at least some animal similar to it) isn't rare. And you are going to debate that most of China is poor as hell? Please. Don't bring up Shanghai and HK as they are far from what most Chinese people live like.

Me, I eat cuz it tastes good. The bragging rights only come in on ATOT.

In Maryland there recently was the snakehead fish story. Some guy brought a live one in to cook for his sister (because she was having surgury), but he released them into a pond and they multiplied. The state frantically tried to kill them all and had to poison the pond (because the fish is such a predator, it will eventually eat all the other fish).

Anyways, when I showed my mom the newspaper story, she recognized the fish -- because she ate it before her sinus surgury. Apparently, you are supposed to eat this fish before having surgury.

I'm just saying that because of these emerging health risks, maybe the Chinese people should lower the notch a bit on constantly looking for something exotic to eat as a novelty item in their restaurants.

I, myself, love to try new foods. I actually liked the taste of cow's brain. But I now think that brains are just too dangerous to eat. There are tribes that regularly eat brain and they have a much higher incidence of having a disease that is similar to mad cow's disease.

From John Hopkins News-Letter:

The south China region has historically been known as an area where the jumping of diseases from animals to humans is relatively common, as happened in 1997 with a strain of avian influenza virus. The close proximity between humans and animals in that region is often cited as a possible explanation for the phenomenon.

I took a class in college regarding bioterrorism, and within that class, the professor talked briefly about how viruses generally come about infecting people. I forgot how exactly a virus for a certain animal could mutate to one that could infect humans, but he used the flu as a well-known example.
