Did the 2002 steel tariff save the American steel industry?

Why or why not?

I don't know for sure that it didn't save the American steel industry, although I'm against protectionism regardless, even if it creates American jobs.

I know a lot of people here are protectionists, so I thought it would be good for me to get 2 sides to the debate on tariffs.

From wikipedia it looks like the steel tarrif was only in place for a few years, and that was way back in 2002 - 2005. From 2005 - 2011 free trade has had plenty of time to destroy american jobs. So I doubt the tariff saved too much.


Your against protectionism, even if it sacrifices national security? How are we supposed to build tanks, ships, planes, trucks, motors,,,, without steel?
