Did something dumb... need help...

I was checking the shares on one of my PCs from another and noticed, logged in as the administrator, the Desktop was shared, so, from the remote PC, I removed administrator and administrators from the list, leaving SYSTEM. Later, I went to that PC and discovered, not surprisingly, that administrator no longer had authority to the desktop.

Q: How do I give administrator & administrators back authority to the desktop?

TIA!

Did you try logging back on remote. There has to be an admin right somewhere.

are you logged in as administrator on a domain or local administrator? if you are logged in as admin on a domain then try logging in as the local administrator to see if you can change the permissions in that way.

Oh! Got it all back! Thanks for the help guys! I looked at the shares from a different PC from the one that I used to screw the machine up originally, saw Desktop there, right-clicked and added Administrator and Administrators back in, logged out as administrator from the affected machine and logged back in and there was everything back! *phew*

With an admin account you could also have taken ownership of the folder and reset the security on it.

When I logged back in as administrator to the affected machine (before I got it fixed), I couldn't get any access at all to the desktop folder... is there a backdoor Robor? For next time...

On the target folder right click and select Properties | Security | Advanced | Permissions. From there you can add yourself back in as long as you have the appropriate permissions. You can also put yourself back as an owner under the Owner tab. Where I used to work we had an admin leave the company and his home directory was set with only himself for permission. We used this to reset the permissions so other admins could see the doc in his directory.
