Did some older cars only have a single drive wheel?

If so, up until how long ago was this practice stopped?

A friend of mine insists that for example a 1995 Ford Mustang V6 only had a single rear drive wheel. Not both.

I've never heard of this. Any fact?

Your friend doesn't understand what a differential does. A 1995 V6 Mustand doesn't have a limited slip differential.

my 1979 Mopar has an open differential with 2.45 gears (soon to be replaced).

my 1987 Crown Vic has an open differential with 3.08 gears.

If you have an open diff, which that car would, in cases of low traction one wheel will spin (The one that can't grip) and the other will do nothing. The design of open differentials makes the power flow in the direction of least resistance. So it could appear that only one wheel drives the car, but that is not actually the case.
